Omae is an online character repository where players and GMs can upload their creations to share with others who are looking for Contacts, Enemies, Critters, custom data, and character sheets for their games. Anyone can download files, but you must have a registered Omae account in order to upload them. Registration is required so that people can see who put the effort into each piece of work, search for other creations by that person, as well as allowing only the author to upload a revised version of the files or delete them entirely. Registration is free and only asks for a username and password. An email address can also be provided so that you can recover your password if it is forgotten. Providing an email address is optional; it is only ever used for password recovery purposes. No other information is gathered as I have no use for that stuff, nor do I give email addresses to anyone. Passwords are encoded and stored in the online database. You may also choose to save your username and password information locally so that you can log into Omae automatically when you open the window. Passwords are stored in an encoded format within the Windows Registry along with other Chummer settings. When a character is downloaded, it is saved to your Chummer\saves\omae directory.
To start using Omae, select Omae from the Tools menu.
Searching for and Downloading Characters
The quickest way to search for a character is to select the type of character you're looking for (Contact, Enemy, or Critter), the order you would like the list to be sorted in, then clicking the Search button. If you're looking for a character of a particular Metatype, having a certain Quality, or by a certain author, you can enter these in the filter section by clicking the Show Filter button. The results of your search will be shown in the space below. You can download any character by clicking on the Download button. Downloads are automatically placed on your Chummer\saves\omae directory.
Logging in to Omae
In order to submit your own characters, you must first log in to Omae. To log in, simply provide your username and password, then click the Login button. You can also choose to have Omae remember your login information so it will automatically log you in each time. With automatic login turned on, your password is stored in an encoded format in the Windows Registry, along with the other Chummer settings. In order to log in, you must have a registered Omae account. Register an account is done the same way as logging in, only you need to click on the Register button instead of Login.
Uploading a Character
To upload a character, click on the Upload Character button. This will open the Upload Character to Omae window. Select the Chummer save file you would like to upload. The Character Name field will be automatically populated with the character's name. Only valid Chummer characters with a name may be uploaded. You must also specify the type of character you are uploading (Contact, Enemy, or Critter), as well as provide a brief description so other users can get an idea as to what the character is about and if it will suit their needs. Once this information has been entered, click Upload so add it to the repository!
Characters are compressed when they are uploaded to make the transfer much faster for both the person uploading and everyone who downloads it. Omae limits the size of an upload to 250KB. Most characters, even those with full-colour mugshots in the dimensions Chummer asks for, should not hit this cap, though there may be times that a character does reach the limit. If your character is too larger, Omae will let you know and stop the upload. This situation should only come up if a character has a mugshot, so this can be fixed by either making the mugshot smaller, or removing it altogether. Once you have uploaded the character, you can put back your original mugshot.
Upload a Data File
To upload data files
, select Data from the search for field, then click on the Upload Files button. This will open the Upload Custom Data window.
Select the files you would like to upload, enter a name and description, and click Upload. The window will check to make sure that any required books are either part of the core data files or are in the custom books files you have selected. If the sourcebook cannot be found, you will not be able to upload the data files without adding it to the list.
Similar to characters, data files are compressed when they are uploaded. Omae limits the size of an upload to 250KB. To give you a rough idea, all of the core data for Chummer can be compressed down to 188KB, so you shouldn't have to worry about your file being too large.
Upload a Character Sheet
To upload a character sheet
, select Character Sheets from the search for field, then click on the Upload Files button. This will open the Upload Character Sheet window.
Click the ... button next to File to Upload to select the necessary files. You can select multiple files by holding the Ctrl key while you click.
Enter a name and description for your character sheet, then click Upload.
Uploads are limited to 250KB like everything else but once again, this limit should not be an issue as raw text compresses rather nicely.
